The Kano State Government has taken a significant step toward addressing urban flooding with the commissioning of a newly completed storm water drainage system in Ladanai, located in Nassarawa Local Government Area.
The project, commissioned by the State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, is designed to improve water flow, reduce flood risks, and protect communities from the growing impacts of climate-induced environmental challenges.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Hashim described the drainage system as a critical intervention in the state’s broader strategy to mitigate urban flooding and enhance environmental sustainability. He noted that the project reflects the administration’s proactive approach to safeguarding lives, property, and infrastructure, particularly in flood-prone areas of Kano metropolis.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the vision of Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose administration has prioritized sustainable infrastructure development as a key component of climate resilience and urban planning.
“This project is part of our immediate response to the recurring challenges of flooding and environmental degradation. It demonstrates the government’s commitment to building resilient communities and ensuring a safer environment for residents,” the commissioner said.
Dr. Hashim further revealed that the Ministry is currently developing a comprehensive drainage master plan for Kano State. The proposed framework, he explained, will provide a long-term and coordinated approach to flood management, integrating modern engineering solutions with climate-smart urban planning strategies.
He emphasized that the master plan will serve as a roadmap for future interventions, ensuring that drainage infrastructure across the state is not only efficient but also sustainable in the face of increasing climate variability.
Residents of the Ladanai community welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the new drainage system will significantly reduce the incidence of flooding, particularly during the rainy season when many neighborhoods in Kano experience waterlogging and disruption of daily activities.
The Ladanai project adds to a growing list of environmental and climate-focused initiatives being implemented by the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, as the state intensifies efforts to build resilience against climate change while promoting sustainable urban development.
