ABCOAD launches Tree Planting Campaign to green campus, combat climate change

The Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Dambatta (ABCOAD), has launched a significant tree planting campaign, marking a major step in its commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and fostering greener campuses.

The initiative is designed to serve as a practical response to the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation.

The campaign was officially flagged off by the College Provost, Professor M. A. Wailare, in a ceremony held on the college premises.

In his address, Prof. Wailare positioned the initiative as a core component of the institution’s broader “Green Campus Project,” which is strategically designed to instill a lasting sense of environmental consciousness and responsibility among students and the surrounding communities.

Professor Wailare eloquently described the project as far more than a simple beautification exercise. “Tree planting is not just about beautifying our environment,” he stressed. “It is a legacy of life, a shield against climate change, and an investment for future generations.”

He firmly stated that as a premier agricultural institution, ABCOAD has a profound responsibility to lead by example and champion sustainable practices for the nation.

AgroClimateNews reports that the college plans to implement the campaign by planting trees across strategic locations within the campus and extending the effort to nearby communities. This execution will rely heavily on the active participation of students and staff, turning the project into a hands-on learning experience.

The Provost also took time to commend the critical roles played by the College’s Directorate of Renewable Energy and Climate Change, the Directorate of Linkages and Affiliation, and the Department of Forestry in bringing the campaign to life.

On his part, the Director of Renewable Energy and Climate Change, Mallam Musa Garba, declared the launch a resounding success. He further noted its alignment with a new state-level environmental policy, stating, “The Kano State Government has recently introduced a new environmental policy with strict fines and penalties against indiscriminate tree felling,” thus contextualizing the college’s efforts within a larger regulatory framework.
