Renewable energy offers hope for Northern Nigeria – Expert

Northern Nigeria has significant potential for renewable energy, especially solar, according to Professor Adamu Idris Tanko, Vice Chancellor of Baba Ahmed University, Kano.

Tanko said the region’s abundant sunlight makes solar power a viable alternative amid high fuel prices. “With the high cost of diesel and petrol, solar is a big alternative. It is available, and people are using it,” he said.

He added that some Nigerians are also exploring wind energy and gas for cooking, reducing dependence on firewood.

However, he noted that affordability remains a major challenge. “The government should subsidize solar, cooking gas, and diesel. These materials are very expensive and beyond the reach of the common man,” he advised.

Tanko expressed optimism that increasing awareness and innovation would drive wider adoption of clean energy solutions.
