Kano climbs from 35th to 4th in Nigeria’s Climate Governance Ranking

Kano State has achieved a major milestone in environmental leadership, moving from 35th to 4th position in Nigeria’s Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking 2025.

Agro Climate News reports that the new ranking, released by the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) in collaboration with the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, highlights the state’s rapid progress in climate action, governance reforms, and environmental sustainability.

The Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, described the improvement as “one of the most remarkable transformations in Nigeria’s climate governance history.”

According to Dr. Hashim, the development is a testament to the visionary leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose administration has placed sustainability and climate resilience at the center of Kano’s development agenda.

“Through deliberate reforms, strengthened institutions, and community-driven programs, we have built a governance system that responds to the global urgency of climate change and the local realities of our people,” the Commissioner said.

He listed key initiatives that contributed to the state’s improved ranking, including the implementation of the Kano State Climate Change Policy, deployment of renewable energy in public institutions, the Urban Renewal Project’s greening initiative, and large-scale afforestation and erosion control efforts across the state.

“These interventions have laid the foundation for resilience, cleaner energy transition, and inclusive growth,” he added.

Dr. Hashim also commended the Federal Ministry of Environment, under the leadership of Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, and the Department of Climate Change for their commitment to advancing subnational climate governance in Nigeria.

He further acknowledged the UK-FCDO Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE) Project and other development partners for their technical and institutional support to Kano’s environmental transformation.

“This achievement belongs to the Government and people of Kano State. Together, we will continue to strengthen our resolve to build a cleaner, greener, and more climate-resilient future for our state and for Nigeria,” Dr. Hashim affirmed.

The Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking assesses how effectively Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT are implementing climate-related policies, promoting sustainability, and strengthening institutional capacity for climate action.
