Nigeria launches second subnational Climate Governance Ranking Report

The Federal Government has unveiled the Second Edition of the Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking (SCGPR 2.0), a comprehensive assessment of how states across Nigeria are addressing the challenges of climate change.

The report, launched in Abuja by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, provides a data-driven framework that evaluates and ranks states based on their climate policies, actions, and institutional capacities.

Speaking at the event, the Minister emphasized that although climate change is a global concern, the most effective and sustainable solutions must begin locally.

“State and local governments are closest to the people and best positioned to drive impactful, data-driven climate actions,” Lawal stated.

According to him, the SCGPR 2.0 fosters transparency, accountability, and healthy competition among states by highlighting progress made in environmental governance. It also serves as a policy guide for mobilizing resources, attracting green investments, and designing evidence-based interventions.

Reaffirming the Federal Ministry’s commitment under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lawal said the government will continue to support states through capacity building, improved data systems, and access to sustainable financing.

He urged governors and local leaders to intensify community engagement, prioritize decarbonization, and promote green job creation.

“This report is not a verdict but a map to guide us toward a low-carbon future,” he added.

Agro Climate News reports that the launch of SCGPR 2.0 represents another milestone in Nigeria’s climate governance efforts, signaling renewed commitment to building a resilient, sustainable, and inclusive green economy across all regions of the country.
