The Lagos State Government has sealed three supermarkets and eateries in the Kosofe area for violating the state’s ban on single-use plastics, as part of its ongoing drive to curb plastic pollution and protect the environment.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who disclosed this in a statement, said the affected outlets — Winny Supermarket, Afia Supermarket at Tipper Garage, Ketu, and Beyond Tastee2Go Restaurant on Ogudu Road, Ojota — were shut down for flouting the regulation. Officials also confiscated banned plastic materials found at the premises.

According to the commissioner, the enforcement followed the full implementation of the ban on single-use plastics below 40 microns, which came into effect on July 1, 2025. The ban covers items such as Styrofoam food packs, plastic straws, lightweight nylon bags, disposable cups, and plastic cutlery.
Wahab stressed that the measure is part of government efforts to safeguard the environment from plastic waste that clogs drainage channels, causes flooding, and threatens marine life. He warned that similar sanctions would be extended to other defaulters across the state.
“We will continue to enforce the ban until residents and businesses fully embrace sustainable alternatives that promote a cleaner, healthier Lagos,” the commissioner said.
Environmental experts have hailed the action as a bold step toward achieving the state’s circular economy goals and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from waste. Enviro News
