Kano launches Electric Cargo Tricycles for women farmers

The Kano State Government has launched a new set of electric cargo tricycles designed to support women farmers in transporting their agricultural produce while promoting clean energy and environmental sustainability.

The initiative, implemented by Mata Zallah Entrepreneurs with the support of Prompcom+ under the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom, was officially flagged off by Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change.

The commissioning took place at the Mata Zallah Smart Agro-Cargo Base Station, Rugar Gundutse, Karfi Junction, in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Hashim commended the women-led organization for introducing an innovation that aligns technology with environmental protection and women’s economic empowerment.

“This project does not only improve the livelihoods of women but also reduces environmental pollution and post-harvest losses,” he said.

“It reflects how innovation can drive sustainable economic growth while safeguarding our environment.”

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the project and ensuring its long-term success. He added that the initiative complements the vision of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to empower women and promote a clean, green, and sustainable Kano.

According to the organizers, the electric tricycles will enable women farmers and agro-entrepreneurs to move farm produce efficiently without relying on petrol or diesel-powered vehicles, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs.

The Mata Zallah Smart Agro-Cargo Base also serves as a hub for training and logistics management, aimed at expanding women’s participation in agribusiness and climate-smart innovation across rural communities in Kano.

Stakeholders at the event lauded the partnership between local innovators and international development partners, describing it as a model for achieving both economic resilience and climate action in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
