Jigawa prioritizes Climate-Smart Agriculture with ₦74.9bn allocation in 2026 budget

Jigawa State is set to intensify its agricultural transformation drive in 2026, following Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s presentation of the ₦901.8 billion Appropriation Bill, which dedicates ₦74.9 billion specifically to agriculture and livestock development.

The allocation—one of the largest sectoral votes in the budget—signals the administration’s commitment to climate-resilient food production, rural livelihoods, and expanded agribusiness opportunities across the state.

Governor Namadi said the agricultural vote is a central component of Jigawa’s broader development framework, noting that the 2026 budget is designed to boost productivity, modernize farming systems, and strengthen resilience against climate shocks that continue to challenge farmers in the North.

According to the proposal, the ₦74.9 billion allocation will support key interventions including irrigation expansion, agricultural mechanization, improved seed distribution, livestock upgrading, farmer training, and enhanced extension services. The funds will also advance value-chain development in rice, sesame, wheat, and other major crops where Jigawa has comparative advantage.

The administration also linked the agricultural budget to critical complementary investments. These include:

    – ₦186.3 billion for roads and transport, aimed at improving rural road networks and easing access to markets for farmers.

    – ₦50.7 billion for power and energy, expected to support agro-processing and cold-chain facilities.

    – ₦35.4 billion for environmental protection and climate resilience, covering erosion control, watershed management, and climate mitigation projects.

    – ₦25.4 billion for water supply and sanitation, part of which will strengthen irrigation and water management systems essential for year-round farming.

Governor Namadi noted that these combined investments will help position Jigawa as a leading hub for climate-smart agriculture in Nigeria, while reducing rural poverty and strengthening food systems.

He added that the budget aligns with the state’s long-term agricultural modernization agenda and responds directly to the needs of farmers grappling with rising input costs, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and land degradation.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel said the 2026 Appropriation Bill is now before the State House of Assembly for legislative consideration.
