The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, has restated the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s food system through better seed quality, improved research adoption, and expanded farmer support.
Speaking at the 8th SeedConnect Africa Conference and the 50th anniversary of the National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC) in Abuja, the Minister described the celebration as an important milestone in building a more reliable and efficient seed industry.

He highlighted recent government actions such as the National Soil Health Programme and the rollout of the new dry season phase of the National Agricultural Growth Scheme–Agro Pocket, which is expanding wheat production across 16 states.
Kyari also noted the breakthrough in rainfed wheat varieties developed by the Lake Chad Research Institute, calling it a major step towards reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imports.

The Minister announced the Seeds for Renewed Hope Programme, backed by the Presidential Catalytic Seed Fund, which will modernise seed production, testing, and distribution nationwide.
He urged stakeholders to work together to boost seed availability, improve yields, and support the administration’s drive for a food-secure and self-reliant nation.
Earlier, the Director General of the NASC, Fatuhu Muhammed, said the 50th SeedConnect Africa brought together participants across African countries.
The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Sen. Kashim Shettima, GCON, was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Food Security, who officially declared the conference open and commended NASC for its leadership in strengthening Nigeria’s seed sector.
