Climate Change triggers severe cold, dust haze in Kano, govt issues health advisory

The Kano State Government has issued a public health advisory following an unusual intensification of cold weather conditions linked to climate change, marked by heavy dust, haze, dry winds and extreme cold across the state.

In a statement on Monday, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, said the disruption of normal cold-season patterns is already posing serious health risks to residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions.

According to the commissioner, the prevailing weather conditions have increased cases of respiratory discomfort, eye irritation and skin dryness, with vulnerable groups such as asthma patients, children and the elderly most at risk.

“People living with asthma and other respiratory challenges are more exposed, as this condition can trigger severe coughing, chest tightness, breathing difficulties and, in some cases, the need for emergency medical attention,” Dr. Hashim warned.

He advised residents to limit outdoor activities unless absolutely necessary, use face masks when going out, maintain proper environmental hygiene at home and workplaces, and drink water frequently to prevent dehydration. The public was also urged to protect their skin and lips from excessive dryness caused by cold and dry winds.

The ministry further cautioned against open burning of refuse and indiscriminate dumping of waste, noting that such practices worsen air pollution and compound health risks during the current weather conditions.

Dr. Hashim urged anyone experiencing persistent coughing, chest irritation or difficulty breathing to seek immediate medical care.

“The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change will continue public sensitisation and enforcement of environmental protection guidelines to safeguard public health during this critical period,” he said.

Agro Climate News reports the commissioner added that collective responsibility and compliance with environmental regulations remain key to reducing climate-related risks and ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all residents of Kano State.
