Kano cracks down on Poster Pollution, intensifies climate-smart urban beautification drive

The Kano State Government has issued a strong warning against the indiscriminate posting of bills, posters, and banners on public infrastructure, describing the practice as a growing threat to environmental sustainability and urban resilience.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the government expressed concern over the increasing defacement of roundabouts, road medians, flyovers, and other landscaped public spaces across the Kano metropolis.

The Ministry noted that such actions not only degrade the city’s visual appeal but also contribute to environmental pollution, damage infrastructure, and obstruct visibility along major traffic corridors.

The state Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, emphasized that the state is currently undertaking an ambitious metropolitan beautification and ecological restoration programme under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. According to him, several roundabouts and green corridors are being transformed through landscaping and climate-conscious design aimed at improving urban livability and environmental quality.

He stressed that the unauthorized use of public infrastructure for posters and promotional materials undermines these efforts and violates established environmental regulations. “This practice is not only illegal but counterproductive to our vision of a clean, climate-resilient and globally competitive city,” the Commissioner stated.

The Ministry therefore directed political groups, businesses, religious organizations, event promoters, and advertising agencies to immediately desist from the act, warning that enforcement teams have been mobilized to ensure strict compliance. Offenders, it added, will face sanctions in line with existing laws, including possible penalties and the cost of restoring damaged public assets.

The government also urged residents to support ongoing urban regeneration initiatives by making use of designated advertising platforms and adhering to environmental guidelines.

This renewed enforcement underscores Kano’s broader commitment to tackling urban pollution, promoting sustainable city management, and aligning its development strategy with climate adaptation goals.

As Nigerian cities continue to grapple with rapid urbanization and environmental pressures, Kano’s approach signals a decisive step toward integrating environmental governance with climate-responsive urban planning.
