The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), in collaboration with key global partners, has showcased a newly released high-yield soybean variety, Chitedze 6, at a field day held in Nsundwe, as part of efforts to boost productivity and strengthen food security in Malawi.
The event, held over the weekend, brought together farmers, researchers, and development partners to witness the performance of improved soybean varieties under local conditions. Chitedze 6, one of IITA’s latest releases, is rapidly gaining popularity among smallholder farmers due to its high yield potential and adaptability.

Speaking at the event, stakeholders highlighted the critical role of improved seed systems in enhancing agricultural productivity and farmer incomes. The field day also served as a platform to promote wider adoption of soybean, a crop increasingly recognized for its nutritional and economic value.
Representatives from Bayer, 2Blades, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation were in attendance, underscoring the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships in scaling agricultural innovations across Africa.
The activity formed part of the IITA 2026 Soybean Improvement Network for Africa (SINA) tour in Malawi, aimed at accelerating the dissemination and adoption of improved soybean technologies across the continent.

IITA has continued to play a pivotal role in strengthening the soybean value chain by supplying foundation seeds to both public and private sector actors. This effort ensures that certified seeds reach farmers efficiently, contributing to sustainable agricultural development.
Experts at the event emphasized that expanding access to improved varieties like Chitedze 6 could significantly enhance resilience among smallholder farmers, particularly in the face of climate variability and rising food demand.
The field day concluded with renewed commitments from partners to deepen collaboration and scale up innovations that support food security and rural livelihoods across Africa.
