Kano Govt invests heavily in drainage rehabilitation to end flooding – Commissioner

Kano State is witnessing significant relief from perennial flooding following massive investments by the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in the rehabilitation and expansion of the state’s drainage infrastructure.

The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, disclosed this in a statement on his office Facebook Page.

He noted that the intervention marks a historic turnaround after years of neglect, vandalism, and siltation that had crippled drainage systems across the state.

He said the government embarked on extensive desilting and development works in major flood-prone areas such as Babangwari, Jakara, and Kwanar Madobi, as well as Toranke Ajingi, Hotoron Arewa, Giginyu, Bajallabe, Badawa, and several newly rehabilitated and constructed roads under the 5km and urban renewal projects.

“The impact is already visible. Communities once submerged during rainy seasons now live free from the threat of flooding. For the first time in years, schools in these areas remained open throughout the rainy season, with no institution forced to close due to floods,” Dr. Hashim stated.

He described the development as a tangible testament to the administration’s decisive leadership and people-focused governance, emphasizing that environmental management and climate adaptation remain top priorities for the government.

To ensure a lasting solution, the commissioner revealed that the government has concluded plans for a Kano State Drainage Master Plan, which has been captured in the forthcoming appropriation bill. The master plan, he said, will provide a framework for the phased construction of a modern, sustainable drainage system to make the state climate-resilient.

“Our commitment is clear and unwavering: we will not relent until Kano is safeguarded against perennial flooding, and future generations inherit a city resilient to the challenges of climate change,” he added.

Residents of several communities across the state have confirmed improved drainage flow this year, with many noting that areas previously known for severe flooding remained dry throughout the peak of the rainy season.
