    Flood: Kano Gov’t commences Drainage Clearance in metropolitan LGAs

    The Kano State Government through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has commenced its annual Drainages Clearance Excersice (Phase 1) within the eight metropolitan local government areas of the state.

    The state commissioner of Environment and Climate Change, Nasiru Sule Garo made the disclosure shortly after inspecting some areas to monitor the conduct of the ongoing drainage Clearance which entered the third day.

    Garo said the Drainage Clearance is in effort of the state government to clear waterways in order to prevent flooding especially now that we are at the period of raining season.

    Areas visited by the Commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, includes State road, Obasanjo road, Maiduguri road to Gadar lado flyover.

    According to a statement by the Director of Publicity of the Ministry, Ismaila Garba Gwammaja, other areas supervised are; Darmanawa to Sallari drainage, zoo road to Tukuntawa and Zaria road among other places.

    The Commissioner who expressed satisfaction with the achievement so far recorded, charged the environment workers and the supervisors handling the work to exhibit high sense of professionalism and ensure proper and timely evacuation of all waste and debris brought out from the drainages to prevent it from going back.

    Urges residents to complement government efforts 

    Garo also enjoined residents and all other stakeholders as a matter of urgency and social responsibility to complement government concerted efforts in this direction by ensuring proper sanitation exercise within their environment.

    “This can be done through clearing our immediate drainages, gutters and water ways as well as ensuring proper waste disposal by using authorised designated dumping sites so as to maintain clean and healthy environment,” he said.

    The Commissioner commended the leadership style of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his passion and commitment to the well being of the teeming populace of kano especially in the environment sector and also express his appreciation to His Excellency, on behalf of the ministry for his continued support and cooperation.
