The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) centre has donated 1,000 tree seedlings to university unions and climate action groups in Sokoto, as part of its efforts to set ambitious goals for climate-resilient initiative.

This was revealed in a statement issued through The university Special Bulletin and signed by the Director Information and Public Relations of the university, Ismaila Mohammed Yauri.

He stated that the Centre for Biotechnology and Plant Tissue Culture at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) donated the 1,000 tree seedlings to university-based unions and local climate action groups as part of its commitment to promoting climate resilience in Sokoto State.

The beneficiaries of this initiative include the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NATT), as well as two environmental groups: the Make Sokoto Green Initiative and the Selfless Impact Development Foundation.

Speaking at the event, Director of the Centre and National President of the Botanical Society of Nigeria, Professor Adamu Aliyu Aliero, emphasised the urgency of collective climate action.

He stated that “One of our main mandates is to promote inclusive climate action. Human survival is increasingly endangered by climate change, and Sokoto—one of the Nigerian states facing serious ecological issues—requires urgent intervention. Tree planting is not just important; it is essential.”

The Vice Chancellor of UDUS, Professor Bashiru Garba, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Malami Muhammad Maishanu, commended the Centre for its timely intervention.

He urged the Centre to sustain and expand the initiative beyond the university community, while also calling on relevant stakeholders to collaborate for broader climate action.

In their goodwill messages, Dr. Bashir Saidu (ASUU Vice Chairman, UDUS), Comrade Abubakar Ibrahim (SSANU Chairman), alongside representatives of NASU and NATT, praised the Centre and the university’s management for their foresight and commitment to environmental sustainability.

The partner organisations, National Agency for Great Green Wall (NAGGW), Make Sokoto Green Initiative and Selfless Impact Development Foundation lauded the centre for the gesture and pledged to work closely with the Centre and UDUS in advancing climate action, food security, and community development projects.

Also speaking at the event, Dataphyte Biodiversity Reporting Fellow, Mr. Tunde Omelehin, challenged the Centre and UDUS to explore strategic partnerships on climate action, highlighting it as one of the most critical areas of contemporary discourse and community service.

The donation marks the beginning of a broader effort by the UDUS Centre for Biotechnology and Plant Tissue Culture to drive climate-resilient initiatives through partnerships, innovation, and community engagement.
