Jigawa Alfalfa Project to generate $400m, create over 600,000 agric-related jobs — Commissioner

The Jigawa State Executive Council, under the leadership of Governor Malam Umar A. Namadi, has approved major initiatives aimed at strengthening agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability across the state.

The decisions were reached during the Council’s meeting held on Monday, October 27, 2025, at the Government House, Dutse.

One of the key highlights of the meeting was the approval of a strategic partnership for the development of the Alfalfa Value Chain between the Jigawa State Government and El-Meena Farms Limited, serving as the Prime Anchor.

The initiative enjoys financial partnership and support from both the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM Bank) and the Saudi Export-Import Bank (Saudi EXIM Bank).

According to the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa Ahmed, the project represents a significant step toward diversifying Jigawa’s economy, enhancing livestock and dairy production, and positioning the state as a major hub for Alfalfa cultivation and export in Sub-Saharan Africa.

He explained that the Alfalfa Value Chain Project is expected to generate over 400 million US dollars in economic value, create more than 100,000 direct jobs and over 500,000 indirect jobs across the state. The large-scale cultivation, processing, and export of high-quality Alfalfa will strengthen rural livelihoods, empower local farmers, and attract foreign investments into the state’s agro-economy.

Sagir Musa Ahmed reaffirmed the Namadi administration’s commitment to sustainable agricultural transformation, emphasizing that the partnership aligns with the Governor’s 12-Point Agenda focused on private sector-driven growth, food security, and global competitiveness.

In a related development, the Council also constituted a committee to review a proposal for a Comprehensive Regional Planning Framework for Jigawa State, presented by Pragmatic Solutions Consult Nig. Ltd. The framework seeks to provide a strategic blueprint for land use, infrastructure, housing, transportation, economic zoning, and environmental management.

The inclusion of the Commissioner for Environment in the committee highlights the administration’s focus on integrating environmental sustainability and urban planning into Jigawa’s long-term development goals.

According to the Commissioner, effective regional planning is vital to guiding Jigawa’s transformation into a modern, resilient, and economically vibrant state, ensuring that both urban and rural communities benefit from well-planned growth and improved living standards.
