IAR to develop fruit juice processing machine

The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has directed its Agricultural Mechanization Programme to begin work on a prototype fruit juice processing machine, in response to growing demand from stakeholders.

The directive was issued by the Executive Director of the Institute, Prof. Ado Yusuf, during the ongoing Year Review Meeting on Tuesday.

He said the move followed complaints from farmers and stakeholders who were unable to process surplus oranges from ABU’s tree-planting campaign.

Prof. Yusuf described the proposal as a strong research opportunity, stressing that IAR must focus on innovations that directly address Nigeria’s agricultural challenges.

He cited tomato production and preservation as another area where practical solutions are urgently needed, commending the tomato slicer presented at the meeting but urging improvements to its capacity and appeal.

He warned researchers against repeated complaints of poor funding, noting that many had yet to fully explore available opportunities.

“Reducing drudgery in agriculture remains a core priority of the Institute,” he said, adding that senior professors must continue to mentor younger scientists to drive impactful research.

The Year Review Meeting, which continues until February 13, 2026, is assessing progress across programmes and setting new targets for demand-driven agricultural research.
