A heavy downpour that occurred on Wednesday, 17th of July 2024 has affected 1,664 people and submerged 779 hectares of farmlands in Sokoto state.
This was disclosed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on their official X handle, formerly known as Twitter.

The agency said the flood occurred in some communities of Gada local government area, leaving hundreds of people displaced.
“NEMA Sokoto Operations Office, SOO assess communities affected by flood in Gada Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Some of the communities affected include Dantudu, Balakozo, Gidan-tudu and Tsitse communities.
“The flood which occurred last week Wednesday 17th July 2024 affected about 1,664 persons. Many people were displaced due to the intrusion of the flood waters into their houses. Most of the houses made of clay collapsed.
“The assessment team also reported that livestock including sheep and goats were also lost in the flood with many of them still missing. The incident also submerged farmlands, affecting about 779 hectares,” the agency stated.
AgroClimateNews reports that NEMA and several disaster management agencies have predicted that there would be floods in many states during this year’s rainy season. It also urged people living in flood-prone communities to relocate to highland areas.
