The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, has commenced a two-day Agroecology Training Workshop aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and climate-smart farming practices in Nigeria.
The workshop is organized by IAR in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS).

It seeks to sensitize and build the capacity of agricultural stakeholders on best agroecological practices that enhance soil health and sustainable crop production.
The training began on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at the Balarabe Tanimu Conference Hall, IAR Samaru, Zaria.
The program aims to tackle the challenges of climate change, soil degradation, and low productivity by equipping participants with practical knowledge on sustainable farming systems.
Declaring the event open, Prof. Ado A. Yusuf, Executive Director of IAR, represented by Prof. Nafiu Abdu, emphasized the need for Nigeria to intensify efforts in adopting agroecological practices to safeguard the nation’s food systems. He urged participants to replicate the knowledge gained within their communities.
Representing FMAFS, Mr. Yerima commended IAR’s leadership in advancing agricultural innovation and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to promoting climate-smart agriculture nationwide.
The first day featured technical presentations by experts from IAR and ABU, including Prof. Aisha Abdulkadir, Prof. Abdulazeez Shero Isah, Dr. S. M. Yahaya, and Prof. M. K. Saleh, who addressed topics ranging from climate adaptation and soil health to socio-economic factors influencing agroecology adoption.
The workshop continues Wednesday, November 5, with practical demonstrations on composting and organic soil management techniques to strengthen participants’ hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture.
