The Jigawa State Government has signed a joint venture agreement with China’s Shandong Hengtai Industrial Trading Company to develop the Maigatari Border Free Zone, a move expected to strengthen agro-industrial activities in the state.
Located along the Nigeria–Niger border, the free zone is strategically positioned to support cross-border trade and agricultural exports within the West African subregion.

The project will include facilities for agro-processing, storage, and logistics, which are expected to reduce post-harvest losses and improve value addition for key crops produced in the state.
Governor Umar Namadi said the initiative is aimed at boosting investment and transforming the agricultural economy of the state.
“This partnership will open up new opportunities for agro-processing, trade, and investment, especially for our farmers and young entrepreneurs,” he said.
He added that the project aligns with his administration’s development priorities.
“The Maigatari Free Zone will enhance market access for agricultural produce, create jobs, and strengthen Jigawa’s position as a hub for regional trade,” the governor stated.
The development is expected to improve rural livelihoods, promote export-oriented farming, and contribute to food security in Jigawa State.
