Kano gets 10,000-tonne onion storage facility to curb post-harvest losses

Kano State has recorded another milestone in agro-industrial development with the inauguration of a 10,000-tonne Onion Storage Facility aimed at strengthening food security and improving the livelihoods of farmers across northern Nigeria.

The facility was inaugurated at Gadar Tamburawa, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, by the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh, who described the project as a strategic intervention aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in agriculture, industrialisation and youth employment.

Senator Enoh said the storage facility would significantly reduce post-harvest losses, stabilise onion prices, enhance farmers’ earnings and generate employment opportunities along the agricultural value chain. He commended the private sector for driving critical investments that support national food security goals.

The facility was developed by Prism Foods Limited to address long-standing challenges faced by onion farmers, especially the lack of modern storage infrastructure which often leads to massive losses during peak harvest seasons.

Speaking at the event, the Kano State Commissioner for Commerce, Alhaji Shehu Wada Sagagi, praised the investment, describing it as timely and economically impactful. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government to creating an enabling environment for investors, particularly those contributing to agro-processing and value addition.

The Chief Executive Officer of Prism Foods Limited, Mr. Aman Gupta, said the project was designed as a direct response to the heavy losses suffered by onion farmers due to inadequate storage facilities. According to him, the storage centre will help farmers preserve produce, access better markets and earn improved returns on their investments.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the National Onion Producers Association, Alhaji Aliyu Maitasamu, disclosed that Nigeria produces approximately two million metric tonnes of onions annually, assuring that the facility will enjoy a steady and sustainable supply of produce.

Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the storage facility will transform the onion value chain, reduce waste, enhance food availability and strengthen Kano’s position as a leading hub for agricultural production and agro-industrial investment.
