The National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) has made a significant breakthrough in Nigerian agriculture with the release of two new improved varieties of yam and sweet potato.
This development aims to boost food security and crop productivity in the country, addressing pressing issues of hunger and poverty.

Dr. Charles Amadi, who led the research team, said the innovation is expected to have a profound impact on farmers, enabling them to increase yields, improve income, and enhance market competitiveness.
He added that the achievement is seen as a crucial step forward in modernizing and sustaining Nigerian agriculture.
“The new varieties will provide farmers with resilient planting materials, better suited to withstand climate challenges and pests.
“Additionally, they will open up new market opportunities, supporting food security and economic growth,” he said.
NRCRI’s efforts demonstrate a commitment to improving agricultural practices and livelihoods across the nation as the country strengthens efforts to address food insecurity.
