The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) is working on modalities and modern techniques of plastic waste management to ensure a clean environment and create employment opportunities for teeming youths in Kano.
The Kano ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Dr. Dahir M. Hasim stated this in an interview with China Radio International, CRI Hausa in Beijing.

Hasim was in China for two weeks for a specialized training session on plastic waste management techniques organized by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, at Suzhou University of Science and Technology.
The medical doctor turned environmentalist said the knowledge acquired at the training would be put to better use in collaboration with REMASAB.
“Suzhou’s remarkable environmental cleanliness has left a lasting impact on me,” said Dr. Hashim.
“The effect plastics are having in our environment is something we should pay special attention to, most especially if you look at how it affects the use of decomposed waste into making compost manure, ”he added.
“Utilizing my knowledge towards a better environment is one of my take-homes. REMASAB is the agency that looks into waste management in Kano, and I will make sure we give them all the necessary support.”
Dr. Hashim stressed the significance of waste sorting and recycling, noting that: “Recycling is one of the most lucrative businesses any community or state can rely on in terms of income and revenue generation. I made the commitment of creating sensitization around waste sorting and seeking government support to create a policy that will attract investors into the waste-to-wealth intervention.”
My experiences in China have solidified my vision for a cleaner, greener Kano State:
“The training sessions were invaluable, especially considering the environmental challenges we are facing in Kano, such as climate change, drylands, erosion, flooding, and land degradation. My goal is to make a positive environmental impact in our community.”
Dr. Hashim noted that this initiative of plastic waste management is geared towards a clean environment and job creation which are parts of the job mantra of Gov. Abba Kabiru Yusuf’s administration.
He expressed commitment and determination for the knowledge acquired at the training to be transferred so as to create a sustainable future for Kano State.
