Kano moves to restore artefacts, safeguard heritage sites from environmental degradation

The Kano State Government has launched a renewed effort to recover looted artefacts and protect heritage sites threatened by rapid urbanisation and environmental degradation.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Abdullahi Bichi, made the commitment at a dinner for the World Heritage Volunteers Initiative in KanKano.

He noted that decades of neglect, poor urban planning, and the effects of climate change have continued to endanger the state’s historical landscapes and monuments.

“Our heritage tells the story of who we are, but uncontrolled development and environmental pressure have taken a toll on many of our cultural sites,” the governor said. “We are determined to recover what has been lost and preserve what remains for future generations.”

Experts say the move aligns with global sustainability goals that link environmental conservation with cultural preservation.

Agro Climate News gathered that many of Kano’s ancient city walls, gates, and traditional structures have suffered from flooding, erosion, and heat stress — worsened by deforestation and land conversion.

The initiative, supported by the African International Documentary Festival Foundation, will involve traditional institutions, local communities, and heritage advocates to restore affected sites and promote eco-friendly conservation practices.

Environmentalists have commended the government’s step, urging it to integrate green planning, afforestation, and waste management measures around heritage zones to ensure long-term sustainability.
