Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, on Monday, departed Abuja for Brazil, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 30th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP30.
The two-day summit, convened by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is scheduled to take place from November 6 to 7 in Belém, the capital of Pará State, located in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon.

The conference, themed “Climate Action and Implementation,” will focus on adaptation, forest conservation, biodiversity protection, and climate justice — issues central to global efforts to address the worsening climate crisis.
According to the Vice President’s media office, Shettima will join world leaders, development partners, and business executives at the high-level meeting to advance discussions on sustainable solutions for climate resilience and environmental protection.
Before returning to Nigeria, Vice President Shettima is expected to undertake a three-day reciprocal visit to his Brazilian counterpart, H.E. Geraldo Alckmin, in Brasília.
The visit follows Alckmin’s working trip to Nigeria in June, during which both nations signed a series of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) designed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and sustainable development.
The Vice President’s participation in COP30 underscores Nigeria’s renewed commitment to global climate action and the implementation of policies aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change on agriculture, the environment, and livelihoods.
