The Borno State Flood Disaster Relief Disbursement Committee has verified 7,256 shop owners affected by the recent flooding in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Local Government Area.
In September, a devastating flood disaster affected Maiduguri, the Borno State capital and environs, submerging about 70 per cent of the city with attendant loss of lives and properties worth billions of naira.

The verification exercise, carried out by the market subcommittee chaired by former MMC Chairman, Ali Bolori, covered several major markets, including Gamboru Market, Monday Market, Tashan Damboa, Metro Plaza, Elkanami Vegetable Market, Customs Area, Moromoro Vegetable Market, Bukar Shuibu and Budum Market.
Shop owners were classified into three categories based on the extent of damage to their properties: minimal, partial, and full destruction.
Speaking on the exercise, Hon. Bolori emphasised that the initiative was in response to
Governor Umara Zulum’s directive to mitigate the economic impact of the flood on traders and business owners.
“The Borno State governor is passionate about assisting victims of the flood disaster and supporting businesses impacted by the flood. That is why he mandated the committee to verify traders affected by the natural disaster,” Bolori stated.
Meanwhile, the Flood Relief Disbursement Committee, led by Engr. Baba Bukar Gujbawu, has continued the verification process in Mashamari Ward, the final ward in Jere Local Government Area.
