2024 farming season records success, says Agriculture Minister Kyari

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has declared the 2024 farming season a resounding success.

He attributed the achievement to a combination of bountiful harvests, abundant rains, and effective government initiatives.

Speaking at a briefing with State House correspondents in Abuja, the minister highlighted the significant progress made in Nigeria’s agricultural sector over the past year.

“The 2024 farming season was very successful, with farmers across the country recording high yields,” Kyari stated.

“The government is working to sustain this progress by supporting wheat farming in highland areas like Taraba state and providing modern farming tools to farmers.”

The minister noted that the opening of previously inaccessible farmlands, particularly in regions that had been plagued by insecurity, played a major role in the agricultural improvements.

“Insecurity had rendered some areas inaccessible to farmers, but we’ve seen remarkable changes,” Kyari explained.

“For example, in Borno state, areas along an 18-kilometer stretch of river that were once too dangerous to farm saw bumper rice harvests during the dry season.”

He also praised improvements in Katsina State, where enhanced security has opened up nearly 70% more farmland for cultivation.

Kyari announced that the federal government is prioritizing modern agricultural practices and advanced technologies, including the use of drones and the distribution of 2,000 tractors from Belarus.

“We have started taking delivery of the tractors, which will be distributed to farmers. Additionally, the government is focusing on increasing tomato farming in the South-East and South-West, with harvests expected by May,” he said.

The minister revealed that 400,000 hectares of farmland are being earmarked for dry season cultivation, while fertilizer supplies are being enhanced to support farmers in boosting their yields.

Kyari also addressed the issue of post-harvest losses, emphasizing the government’s investment in cold storage and better logistics.

“With improved farming practices, better tools, and increased production, Nigeria is becoming a stronger player in agriculture,” he noted. “This progress is also attracting more support and partnerships from global organizations.”

The minister assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to reducing food costs and enhancing food security.
