Kano South launches first phase of large-scale irrigation equipment distribution

Kano South Senatorial District has recorded a major stride in agricultural development as Senator Suleiman A. Kawu Sumaila, OFR, PhD, officially flagged off the first phase of a large-scale irrigation equipment distribution project designed to boost food production and strengthen rural livelihoods.

The launch, held in Kano South, drew a massive crowd of farmers and community representatives. Senator Kawu described the initiative as “a historic milestone” for the district, noting that it aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes food security, rural development and economic empowerment.

According to the Senator, more than 10,000 farmers and households will benefit from the first phase alone—making it one of the largest federal agricultural interventions ever implemented in the district. He commended Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, other National Assembly members from Kano South and the leadership of the APC in Kano State for their support in driving the initiative.

The items shared include: 5,500 pumping machines, 5,500 tube wells, 1,450 hand planters, 20 units of 7.5HP mini tillers, 20 units of 12HP hand tractors, 20 normant harrows for 18HP hand tractors, 20 harrows for 12HP hand tractors, 1,450 sprayers, 165 motorcycles and 165 tricycles.

These tools, Senator Kawu said, were carefully selected to improve irrigation efficiency, expand mechanization, and ease transportation challenges faced by farmers across rural communities.

Beyond equipment distribution, the comprehensive irrigation scheme includes: Rehabilitation of three major dams for year-round water supply, opening of new irrigation sectors, construction of rural access roads, and installation of drainerosion-control structures

The Senator explained that the project is designed to tackle poverty, curb insecurity, and close the rural–urban development gap by promoting sustainable livelihoods and self-employment.

He assured constituents that Phases Two, Three, and Four of the distribution are already in progress and will be rolled out soon.

Senator Kawu expressed appreciation to the Ecology Office under Mrs. Aisha Ndako for designing and supervising the project, as well as to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support.

In his remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, commended the initiative and pledged to brief President Tinubu on the achievements recorded under the Renewed Hope Agenda, driven by Senator Kawu and Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum.
