The Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has emphasized the need for innovative approaches to strengthen climate resilience in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 2026 International Conference of the Nigerian Meteorological Society (NMetS), Prof. Anosike noted that climate change is no longer a distant concern, but a lived reality affecting ecosystems, economies, and societies.
He highlighted Nigeria’s evolving climate challenges, including increasing temperature extremes, shifting rainfall patterns, and coastal erosion.
The Director General stressed that traditional approaches to meteorology are no longer sufficient and emphasized the transformative role of AI, satellite technologies, and big data analytics.
NiMet’s strategic partnerships with international organizations aim to integrate AI into operational activities, providing accurate and timely predictions.
Prof. Anosike received a fellowship and commendation award for his contributions to meteorological services.
