ENVIRONMENT: Kano mobile court fines bakery, sachet water factory, others for poor sanitation

The Kano State Mobile Court has fined a bakery, public convenience operators, and other establishments for violating environmental sanitation laws, as authorities intensify enforcement to rid the state of unhygienic practices.

Agro Climate News reports that the Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), conducts enforcement exercises every month alongside the Mobile Court to ensure sanity, a healthy and clean environment across the state.

During its weekly sitting, the court sanctioned Sea Sweet Bakery and a sachet water factory over poor sanitation, offensive odours linked to indiscriminate urination, and failure to provide adequate toilet facilities.

The presiding magistrate, Halima AB. Wali imposed fines on the offenders, with an option of two days’ imprisonment for non-compliance. The penalties were promptly settled to avoid arrest, while the businesses were given a 24-hour ultimatum to clean their premises.

In a related development, two health facilities — Barewa Clinic and Mubarak Clinic and Maternity — were also fined for operating under unsafe and unsanitary conditions, including blocked drainages and absence of fire extinguishers. The court ordered immediate remediation within 24 hours or face further sanctions.

At the Kano Line Motor Park, two public toilets were sealed after their managers failed to appear before the court. Officials warned that the facilities would remain closed until the operators are identified and sanctioned.

Meanwhile, several traders along Hotoro Ring Road were issued warnings and directed to provide waste bins within 24 hours or risk prosecution.

The enforcement exercise, led by the Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), underscores the state government’s renewed crackdown on sanitation offenders, with offenders facing fines, closure of premises, or possible arrest.
