The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has intensified efforts to combat climate change and environmental degradation with an ambitious plan to plant 10 million trees across the state in 2026.
The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dahir M. Hashim, disclosed this during an inspection visit to tree nurseries in Gwarzo and Dawakin Kudu.

According to him, the initiative is being implemented under the leadership and approval of the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, as part of broader strategies to address deforestation, desertification, and the impacts of climate change.
Hashim explained that the nurseries currently host a wide range of economic and environmental tree species, including moringa, neem, citrus varieties, mango, and guava. These seedlings, he said, will be distributed for planting in communities across the state.
“This programme is not only about planting trees but also about securing our environment, improving livelihoods, and promoting climate resilience,” he noted.

The Commissioner called on community-based organisations, schools, and other stakeholders to actively participate in the initiative by applying for seedlings through the ministry.
He added that application forms would soon be made available, while interested groups can also formally write to the ministry to access the seedlings.
The large-scale tree planting campaign is expected to contribute significantly to carbon sequestration, improved air quality, and sustainable land management in Kano State.
