The Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board, REMASAB, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water Resources and Climate Change, today staged a statewide clean-up exercise ahead of World Environment Day, observed globally on Friday, June 5, 2026.
The exercise, held under the leadership of REMASAB Managing Director Dr. Muhammad S. Khalil and Honourable Commissioner of Environment, water Resources and climate change, mobilized board staff, sanitation workers, and volunteers across Kano metropolis.

The campaign was aimed at raising public awareness on the dangers of indiscriminate waste disposal and promoting a culture of environmental cleanliness.
“First, we must thank you for your commitment and tireless effort in cleaning Kano every morning. You are the ones who ensure our streets, markets, and drainages are free of waste. We truly appreciate your sacrifice,” Dr. Hashim said while addressing REMASAB workers.
“You deserve our gratitude for your diligence in keeping Kano State clean. And by God’s grace, we are in continuous discussions with the government to improve your work system so that you can enjoy better welfare,” he assured.
Dr. Khalil said the joint exercise aligns with Governor Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf’s priority agenda on environmental sanitation and climate action.
“This exercise is one of REMASAB’s core strategies to raise public awareness on the dangers of indiscriminate waste disposal, which remains a major source of flooding, disease outbreaks, and environmental degradation in Kano,” Dr. Khalil stated.

He added that sustained collaboration between REMASAB and the ministry will strengthen waste management systems and protect public health.
REMASAB and the ministry urged residents to dispose of waste properly and participate actively in monthly sanitation exercises to keep Kano clean.
