34 Nigerians die from building collapse in 2024

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has said that at least 34 Nigerians have died due to building collapse in 2024.

During a press briefing yesterday, COREN’s President, Prof. Sadiq Zubairu Abubakar, who disclosed that 222 people were injured in the incidents, expressed concern over the frequent building collapse in Nigeria.

He revealed that since 2012, 350 residents of Lagos lost their lives in 91 building collapse incidents, while in Abuja, 65 people died in 30 cases since 1993.

He said, “From January to July 14, this year alone, at least 22 building collapse cases have been recorded. Lagos accounts for 28 per cent, Abuja and Anambra State each have 19 per cent, and Ekiti and Plateau states each have 9 per cent. Kano, Taraba and Niger states account for 5 per cent each.”

He said that Lagos led in building collapse incidents, with over 91 buildings collapsing and resulting in over 354 deaths since 2012. In Abuja, about 30 buildings collapsed since 1990, leading to the death of over 65 people and injuring many more.

He urged for a review of the COREN Act to close loopholes that allowed perpetrators to avoid prosecution, and lamented the proliferation of unqualified individuals in the building industry.

Prof. Abubakar identified the use of substandard materials, structural failure, illegal alterations and unauthorised conversion of buildings as major causes of collapse.
