    Residents count losses as rainstorm wreaks havoc in Abuja communities 

    Some residents of Abuja in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were rendered homeless as a result of heavy rainstorm that destroyed their properties worth millions of naira.

    The rain which lasted for hours on Wednesday night, destroyed houses in Apo, Jabi, Karmo areas of the city, leaving some people without shelter.

    Abuja Metro had earlier reported how many houses and farmlands were submerged by flood after a heavy downpour at communities in Kwali Area Council.

    The Wednesday night incident reportedly destroyed churches, educational institutions and residential buildings, including makeshift shops.

    Daily Trust reporter, who visited some of the areas which include Apo, Jabi, Karmo, reports that more than 50 houses were destroyed in areas like in areas like Chefuyi and Apo.

    Some of the residents, whose houses were affected, were seeing parking rubbles from the damaged houses, while some were seen relocating to another place.

    One of the residents in Apo who spoke to our reporter, said he was shocked at the level of destruction and damages.

    The victim, who identified himself as Oga Christopher, said he was shocked to see the roof of his house pulled off.

    He said, “As you can see, the rainstorm has caused a lot of damage to my house, but once there is life, by the Grace of God, I will put them in another.”

    Also in Apo mechanic, seven self-contained fully furnished houses were totally pulled down, leaving the owner homeless.

    Daily Trust reporter, who visited Daki Biyu village, a settlement in Jabi district, observed that in some areas like Wazobia and market side, houses were partly damaged.

    A resident, who preferred anonymity, thanked God that no life was lost.

    Another victim, Madam Monica Ibekwe, whose two-bedroom flat suffered extensive damage, narrated how she helplessly watched his house being destroyed by the storm.

    “I couldn’t do anything because of the effect of the rainstorm. I was watching when the rainstorm blew off the roof of my house, I don’t know where to start from, but thank God, I am alive.”
