    Prof. Tanko urges massive tree planting to combat climate impact

    Professor Adamu Idris Tanko has called for aggressive tree planting and local innovation as key climate adaptation measures in Northern Nigeria.

    Speaking with Agro Climate News, he lamented that despite awareness of the benefits of afforestation, tree felling for firewood remains rampant.

    “If we plant so many trees, they take away the carbon and give us oxygen. But instead, we cut down trees and burn them as firewood,” he said.

    He also commended young innovators developing improved stoves that reduce firewood use, some of which have gained international recognition.

    Tanko urged Nigerians to take personal responsibility in reducing carbon emissions, stressing that “each of us has a role to play in either adaptation or mitigation.”
