The Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has announced a call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from qualified individual consultants to support the development of training modules on Neglected and Underutilized Crop Species (NUS) across Africa.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to promote what are often described as “forgotten foods” — crops that hold significant potential for improving nutrition, enhancing food security, and boosting livelihoods, yet remain largely underexploited.

According to the announcement, the selected consultant will be responsible for transforming key learning resources into structured training modules suitable for e-learning and knowledge-sharing platforms. The assignment is expected to contribute to strengthening capacity across African food systems by integrating NUS into mainstream agricultural practices.
The project, funded by FAO under the FAO-NUS initiative, will run for a duration of 20 man-days. Core responsibilities include preparing an inception report, conducting desk reviews, developing training materials, and providing periodic progress reports.
FARA emphasized that the assignment aligns with its broader mission of supporting agricultural innovation and sustainable food systems development across the continent.
To qualify, applicants are required to possess a PhD in agronomy, crop science, or a related discipline, along with a minimum of 15 years’ post-PhD experience in agricultural research, development, and training. Demonstrated expertise in developing training modules and familiarity with African agricultural systems, particularly NUS-related issues, are also essential.
Interested candidates are invited to submit their Expressions of Interest via email as outlined in the official notice.
The deadline for submission is Friday, April 10, 2026.
