The Kano State Government says it’s making moves toward addressing the issue of Climate Change and other desertification problem’s with a view to maintain cleaner and greaner environment that stand the test of time.
The State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change Rt. Hon. Nasiru Sule Garo disclosed this today at a one day summit organised by Surge Africa a non governmental organisations held in kano metropolis.

The Commissioner who expressed appreciation for selecting Kano State to be the host for the northwestern region for this summit which includes Jigawa State, Katsina, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kano State respectively.
Garo further explained the objectives of the summit was to bring all the stakeholders in the area of Climate Change Issues onboard with a view to brainstorm, share knowledge and ideas from this different states on how best to tackle the issue of Climate Change and reduce emissions in our environment so that together we will safeguard our ecosystem and eco restoration and by extension mitigate the issue of land degredation and desertification, he added.
The commissioner who expressed optimism that, looking at the timber and Caliber of the participants couple with the role expected to play by each Commissioner and the Honourable Chairmen House Committee on Environment a more robust documents will be presented that will serve as a driving tools for this process.
He therefore highlighted some of the measures or strategies adopted by the present administration towards addressing the climate change issues, which includes changing the name of the ministry of Environment to the ministry of Environment and Climate Change, reviving the operations and mandate of Water Shed Erosion and Climate Change Management Agency ( WECCMA) to its full operations by assigning the Executive Secretary to manned the mantle leadership, also The Refuse Management Sanitation Agency (REMASAB) and The ACReSAL as well as organising a two days workshop for climate change policy by WECCMA in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders among other interventions by Kano State government.
Earlier, in her address the founder Surge Africa, Nasreen Al-Ameen Said this gathering is a platform for cross fertilisation of ideas, opinion and knowledge on how to bound together especially the northwestern region which is considered as the most vulnerable States that are mostly affected by the climate change issues, Flooding, Erosion as well as low production in agriculture and the need to put all hands on desk for prompt and quick response to this issue.
She than commended Kano State government for accepting the hosting rights of this one day summit and also commended other commissioner’s of Environment and their Chairmen House Committee on Environment for attending the summit dispiite their tight schedules, it’s quite impressive, she maintained.
