The recent flooding incidents in Bauchi State have claimed 24 lives, left 163 people injured and destroyed properties valued at over N22.3 billion across the 16 LGAs, the state government has said.
The state’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajiya Hajara Yakubu Wanka, disclosed this at a press briefing after the State Executive Council meeting, presided over by Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.

She noted that the governor had established a committee, led by the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, to assess the damage in the most affected areas.
The commissioner said: “The committee is still compiling data as rains continue, but preliminary figures reveal the extensive impact: 24 fatalities, 163 injuries and significant damage to infrastructure.
“The floods washed away 60 culverts, cut off 12 major roads, destroyed 178 electric poles, and caused the death of 11,183 livestock. In addition, 122,330 households were affected, and 52,000 homes were destroyed.
“In response to the disaster, some victims initially took shelter in primary schools but later relocated to stay with relatives, as no Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps were set up.”
She added that the state government is collaborating with the ministries of Health, Education, and other relevant agencies to assess the full scale of the disaster, which remains “unquantifiable.”
Wanka said the state government, in partnership with the federal government, was working towards finding a lasting solution to the recurring floods.
