At the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration in Katsina, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Hussaini Hamisu Yanduna, raised alarm over the worsening impact of insecurity on rural farming communities.
Addressing a large crowd that included Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, Yanduna described how persistent armed banditry has severely disrupted agricultural activities, causing widespread hardship among farmers.

He cited the tragic 2024 Kankara attack, where nearly 50 lives were lost and many others abducted, as a painful example of the insecurity plaguing the state.
These incidents, he said, have forced farmers to abandon their lands, increased food prices, and intensified inflation—undermining rural livelihoods and food security.
Yanduna acknowledged recent efforts by the Katsina State government, such as the deployment of over 2,000 youths to vulnerable areas and the introduction of armoured vehicles via the Community Watch Corps, which have helped restore some security.
However, he stressed that more robust federal action is urgently needed.
“No society can thrive without food security,” he stated, urging the federal government to intensify efforts to protect farmers and rural communities.
The event also recognized achievements under Governor Radda’s administration in improving worker welfare, including prompt implementation of the minimum wage, payment of pensions, and gratuities. The governor reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and productivity, describing workers as the “backbone of national development.”
