Kano court remands 5 people for allowing goats to destroy govt planted trees

The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has secured a court conviction against Usman Abdullahi and four others for allowing their goats to roam freely and destroy government-maintained plants along Lodge Road and Race Course Road.

The case, prosecuted by Barrister Bahijjah H. Aliyu, proved that the defendants’ actions violated Section 7(e) of the Kano State Public Health Law, 2019, which prohibits any act that causes environmental nuisance or degrades public infrastructure.

Seventeen goats belonging to the defendants were allowed to wander unsupervised, leading to the destruction of ornamental and air-purifying plants planted by the state government to beautify the city and improve air quality.

The court found all five defendants guilty and sentenced them to one month imprisonment, with an option to pay a fine. Each was fined ₦25,000 and jointly ordered to pay ₦100,000 in compensation for the damage caused.

The Ministry emphasised the importance of responsible animal ownership and the protection of public green spaces.
