IAR, AATF train media, scientists on effective communication of agricultural biotechnology

The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, in collaboration with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), has commenced a two-day media training workshop aimed at enhancing the communication skills of scientists, lead farmers, and spokespersons involved in agricultural biotechnology and Genetically Modified (GM) product research.

The training, taking place at FAB Hotel, Zaria, seeks to strengthen participants’ capacity to engage effectively with the media and the public on issues surrounding biotechnology and agricultural innovation.

Declaring the workshop open, the Executive Director of IAR, represented by the Deputy Director, Prof. Nafiu Abdu, underscored the importance of science communication in promoting public understanding of biotechnology.

He urged participants to use accurate, transparent, and relatable messaging in addressing misconceptions about GM research.

Delivering a presentation on “Overview of Ag Biotech Campaign and Why the Voice of Scientists Matters,” Irene Choge of AATF emphasized the central role of scientists in shaping evidence-based public discourse around biotechnology adoption in Africa.

Sessions on media relations and communication strategies were handled by experts from ABU’s Department of Mass Communication — Dr. Muhammad Hashim Sulaiman, Dr. Kabiru Danladi, and Dr. Qaribu Yahaya Nasidi — who provided practical insights into simplifying complex scientific concepts for the general public.

Agro Climate News reports that the workshop continues tomorrow, with participants expected to develop communication plans and media engagement strategies tailored to local contexts.
