NALDA establishes Greenhouses to boost year-round vegetable supply

The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) has embarked on setting up greenhouses across major Nigerian cities to ensure the steady supply of vegetables throughout the year.

Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of NALDA, Mr. Cornelius O. Adebayo, disclosed this while inspecting one of the projects at the University of Abuja. He said the initiative is designed to bring vegetable production closer to major markets and reduce post-harvest losses.

“Here we have about 20 greenhouse units with a nursery, while in Shagamu, Ogun State, we have 30 units with a nursery as well. Each site includes a packaging house, cold storage facility, and operates fully on solar energy. The idea is to make vegetables available closer to the people,” he stated.

Mr. Adebayo explained that the Shagamu site targets Lagos, the country’s largest vegetable market, adding that NALDA is also supporting private greenhouse operators along the Shagamu–Epe Cluster to expand their capacity.

Beyond greenhouses, NALDA is launching an open-field vegetable production programme, targeting at least 10 hectares per federal constituency, to be managed mainly by women farmers.

He said land clearing had begun in Kwara, Taraba, and Plateau States, where irrigation facilities, packaging houses, and cold storage will be provided.

Adebayo expressed confidence that NALDA’s multi-layered approach—combining greenhouses, open-field cultivation, and cold-chain systems—will enhance vegetable availability, reduce seasonal price hikes, and cut transportation costs across the country.
