The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Federal University Gashua (FUGA) Branch, has donated date palm tree seedlings worth ₦200,000 to support the university’s FUGA Green Code (FGC) environmental sustainability initiative.
The donation, presented to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Yaqub Ahmed Geidam, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, fulfilled a pledge made by the union during the official launch of the FUGA Green Code.

Presenting the seedlings, SSANU-FUGA Branch Chairman, Comrade Arch. Kaka Bukar Dikwa, said the gesture demonstrated the association’s commitment to supporting environmental sustainability and the university’s broader development agenda.
Dikwa commended the Vice-Chancellor for what he described as an inclusive administration, particularly his attention to staff welfare and the prompt payment of staff entitlements.
He said SSANU members remained committed to supporting policies and programmes that would contribute to the growth of the institution, while urging the management to sustain efforts towards improving staff welfare and institutional development.
Responding, Professor Geidam described SSANU as “an association you can rely on,” praising the union for fulfilling its pledge to the FUGA Green Code.
The Vice-Chancellor said making a pledge was different from fulfilling it, noting that redeeming such commitments required sincerity, courage and commitment.
He said the initiative had generated considerable goodwill for the university, attracting support from individuals, organisations and other stakeholders interested in promoting a greener and more sustainable environment.
Professor Geidam also stressed the importance of constructive collaboration between university management and staff unions, saying the era when unions were expected to be permanently opposed to management had passed.
He urged SSANU to further sensitise its members to reciprocate management’s efforts on staff welfare through punctuality, commitment and dedication to their responsibilities.
The FUGA Green Code is anchored on the theme, “One Student, One Tree, One Greener Future,” and seeks to promote tree planting, environmental responsibility and sustainability among students, staff and other members of the university community.
The donation of the date palm seedlings adds to growing efforts to expand green spaces within the university and strengthen environmental stewardship among the FUGA community.
